The Misunderstandings of Feminism

There are a lot of misconceptions about what feminism is and what it means to be a feminist. Some of these are spread on social media whether out of malicious intent or out of a lack of understanding. These misconceptions can be harmful though, leaving some people to misunderstand and create their own ideas of what a feminist is. A lot of what I have seen shared on social media are videos of extremists who have their own ideology of what a feminist is or believe that man-hating is what feminism is. Neither of those things are representative of all feminists or where the movement is today. Some of the current goals of feminists today are to break down social barriers for what is expected of both men and women and to help make everyone equal, regardless of an individual's race or gender.

Some of the misconceptions of feminism are as follows:

Feminists hate men.

All feminists are pro-choice.

Feminists cannot be religious.

Feminists are against stay-at-home moms.

All feminists have full careers.

Feminists can only be women.

It is important to understand that not all feminists agree on everything, there can be differences of opinions. It is also important that people know it is not difficult to become a feminist and express feminist ideas. A lot of this country believes some of the misconceptions listed above and it is important for people to understand what feminism actually is. I encourage any of you to call out misconceptions of feminism if you see them because everyone benefits from it. Feminism is something everyone can be a part of.
